Louie Lopez, director DoD STEM, applauds collaboration

Leaders share best practices, develop plans for next steps and harness powerful energy and excitement

Louie Lopez, director of DoD STEM, Monday told members of the STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice that a “vested community will almost always yield fruitful results.”

Lopez’ remarks, delivered on the opening day of People, Planet, Prosperity in June 2022 in Bay City, Mich., underscored the critical role of the STEM Learning Ecosystems in the effort to improve STEM opportunities for all.

Lopez was one of dozens of speakers and presenters at People, Planet, Prosperity, the 12th in-person convening of the STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice and the first since 2020.

“Much needs to be done today,” Lopez said. “DoD STEM is steadfast in this commitment. DoD STEM’s vision is to create a diverse and sustainable STEM talent pool through educational opportunities for students and teachers of all ages throughout the country and across all demographics.”

Lopez said that DoD STEM seeks to increase participation in STEM activities of “underserved and underrepresented groups. Overall, the DoD is committed to ensuring our nation has enduring access to diverse and agile technical talent ready to meet our national defense and security challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Challenges from the Next Generation
