About

WNY STEM HUB, the region’s leading convener of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiatives, is a not-for-profit organization with 700 individual members representing more than 250 organizations in Western New York. WNY STEM HUB is an initiative of the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, affiliated with the National STEM Funders Network, the national STEMx network, the Empire State STEM Learning Network and is a regional partner with Code.org. Its aim is to create awareness and partnerships that serve learners of all ages in accessing STEM/STEAM learning and careers.

Key Programs

The Girls Coding Project – This annual two-week summer experience presented in partnership with the Girl Scouts of WNY, SUNY Buffalo State College, and corporate partners gives girls (primarily from the urban core) hands-on computer training. Women representing the breadth of IT professions participate as role models and mentors.

Hand in Hand – Launched in 2017 with initial funding from AT&T, Hand in Hand engages up to 45 students to design prosthetic hands for local children in need using 3D printing technology. There are rich learning experiences, including biomedical design, 3D print technology, leadership development, and conversations with professionals in related fields. Service learning is at the heart of this program: everyone involved – from students to teachers to mentors to recipient children – are changed by this program presented in partnership with local business and foundation support and collaboration with the Health Sciences Charter School.

Progressive Career Exploration Partnership© – This program gives employers the opportunity to introduce students career opportunities. The impact is mutual and powerful: employers cultivate interest in the next generation workforce, while students hear authentic stories from working professionals who can help shape their career aspirations.

Quality Partnership Program – Schools and school districts who aspire to higher levels of STEM programming seek high-level endorsement designed to maximize the impact and value of existing STEM/STEAM program. This validation will: enhance the trust built with stakeholders and funders; reinvigorate interest in STEM program; and expose a school’s STEM leadership to multiple best practice tools from WNY STEM Hub’s team of STEM master professionals.
