This article published in the Fall 2012 issue of Afterschool Matters by Gabrielle Lyon, Jameela Jafri and Kathleen St. Louis, offers the metaphor of Youth Pathways to replace the STEM “pipeline” when conceptualizing how young people progress toward STEM careers. The authors argue that “pipeline is a limited—and limiting—framework that undermines young peoples’ needs for multiple entry and “re-entry” points and for a continuum of opportunities that support their full social and intellectual development.” The authors introduce the Youth Science Pathways Framework and detail how the framework evolved from Chicago-based Project Exploration.
