About

Founded in 2024, the East Alabama STEM Ecosystem is a collection of like-minded partners preparing all learners to thrive through high-quality science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experiences. Our goal is to increase the number and visibility of informal STEM opportunities throughout our region and beyond, while increasing collaboration between STEM providers. The Auburn University I-STEM Connectory serves as our anchor organization and provides support, guidance, and resources. Our focus region is Alabama Workforce Development Region 5 and we serve the eastern half including Bullock, Chambers, Lee, Macon, Russell and Tallapoosa counties. Our mission is to cultivate an inclusive and dynamic STEM-learning network that fosters a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and community development.

VISION
The vision of the East Alabama STEM Ecosystem is to create a resilient, STEM-ready workforce, while promoting lifelong learning and civic engagement.

GOALS
At the East Alabama STEM Ecosystem, we prioritize creating a collaborative environment where all partners can thrive and contribute to our shared goals.

  1. Systems: To develop a governance model that clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of STEM ecosystem members, ensuring sustainability and accountability across all sectors involved. We will then develop a centralized digital governance plan and create subcommittees to be able to connect local schools, businesses, and out-of-school time providers to streamline STEM resources and opportunities for students.
  2. Teaching and Learning: We will create a network and database of educators and professional development coordinators who communicate and bridge informal and formal STEM activities. This network will assist in implementing informal STEM and career exploration activities such as STEM Expos, Family STEM Nights, Invention Convention Alabama, Science Olympiad, Science and Engineering Fair, Robotics, etc. using 4-H, Scouts, Afterschool, Summer school and camps in addition to in-school programs.
  3. Workforce: The East Alabama STEM Ecosystem will develop and implement a career pathway framework connecting at least 50 students annually to local employers in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and IT. This will be achieved through job shadowing, internships, and apprenticeships, with at least 10 partnerships established to ensure alignment between STEM education and workforce needs. Additionally, we will actively pursue funding avenues, such as grants and tax incentives, to provide resources and support for businesses that dedicate their time to partnering with educational institutions.
