Spotlight: Pittsburgh Regional STEM Ecosystem

carnegie-stem-excellenceThe Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway initiative is built on the belief that school systems, individual schools, departments and teachers can improve their STEM education practices through a positive, collaborative approach. Designed to help the widest possible range of school districts and schools adopt best practices in STEM education, the Pathway includes assessment and planning tools for schools and districts; support for teacher professional development and district-to-district mentoring; and recognition for schools that are moving toward effective STEM education. One noteworthy facet of the Pathway is a self-assessment instrument, through which participating schools and school districts evaluate themselves in teacher qualification, curriculum, family engagement, real-world connections and other criteria. Based on the assessment, schools or districts develop long-term strategic plans and timelines for action with a focus on continuous growth—valuable for all, regardless of STEM offerings.

Check out this excellent self-assessment rubric, available through the online hub at STEMisphere.org, which is created by the Carnegie Science Center.
